Grand National Preview: Arbor Supreme, Black Apalachi and Niche Market
Arbor Supreme is an interesting type - and one that we're keeping a close eye on in the run-up to the Grand National 2010. With victories at distance, he appears to have the lungs to cope with the Aintree slug-fest, and JP McManus holds Arbor Supreme in high esteem.
16/1 is a little short, though, for a horse that has disappointed on the big occasions, and has no course experience. However, 9 times out of 16, he has been there or thereabouts, and there's something progressive about him that gives the experienced punter hope that he'll tackle the fences and stick the distance enough to be worthy of an each-way bet. I'd wait until the day, though, to get the best odds.
Black Apalachi is one whose luck has always deserted him at Aintree, and with the handicapper putting him out of the winning weights, it's hard to see him getting round again. Form is behind him, but we've discarded him simply because no horse can carry that much for so long.
A third to Denman has given Niche Market's backers plenty of hope. It's also given the handicapper food for thought, and as a result, he's on 11st4lb, still heavier than the weight Hedgehunter carried round at the peak of his powers. However, he's a cracking horse, and he really could have beaten Tricky Trickster at Newbury - and as an Irish National winner, he's got form. You can get 16/1 against Niche Market, but that weight is a real worry.
