Grand National Preview: Big Fella Thanks

It's tempting to back Big Fella Thanks for many reasons. First of all, he got round last year, as a seven-year-old. Admittedly, seven-year-olds don't win the national. You'd have to go back as far as 1940 to find the last one that did, but Big Fella Thanks gave us all a sneak preview of what he's capable of.

He's equally within the weights that traditionally win the National, and he comes off at a rating well above what we'd expect from a national winner. In fact, everything, statistically speaking, is in his favour. That makes him the natural favourite. He impressed at Newbury, despite it being not his natural trip, and all things seem to point in his favour.

So, what's holding us up? Not much, really, other than the fact that he's been so lightly raced - but does that really matter? He's been primed for the Grand National, and a price of 8/1 to be found with most bookmakers is decent value for a National favourite. Ruby Walsh is in the saddle, which only adds to the argument that if you're going to pin-stick, then pin-stick with precision - Big Fella Thanks is a deserved favourite.
