Grand National Preview: Mon Mome

Mon Mome was a huge shock last year. Even we were scratching our heads, although we did tell you that he had an outside chance, at least for an each-way punt. So... we didn't back him, but who did? In hindsight, though, look at the horses he was up against - they were all labouring under heavy weights, and Mon Mome, lightly weighted at the time, just flew past them.

Imagine doing the 200 metres at school, with all of your classmates carrying their school books in rucksacks. And your rucksack was empty, save for that apple yer mum keeps packing for you every morning. That's what it was like. So this year, with Mon Mome carrying 11st 7lb on his back, he doesn't have a cat in hell's chance. He's been handicapped out of this year's Grand National - so if you're thinking that he can win it again, you're wrong.

He also broke another record that we thought would go untouched - a French horse winning the National. But wait a minute - he came third recently at Cheltenham, so maybe that National "fluke" was less flukey than we previously thought.

There's every indication that Mon Mome will give it everything, and that he is very much more talented than people thought prior to last year's Grand National. However, he's carrying a rucksack full of schoolbooks, and he's not going to enjoy it as much as 2009.
