Ground getting softer at Aintree
The odds against Whinstone Boy have taken a slight tumble today, as an indication that the bookmakers are seriously looking at soft-ground horses ahead of the Aintree Grand National.
With the weather battering the north of England, and further rain scheduled ahead of next Saturday's big race, the likelihood of soft ground is changing the shape of the race already. In good to soft conditions, the Grand National has traditionally been a slug-fest. The most famous finish of recent years saw just four runners come home. Should the ground be softer than that, the likelihood is that many horses will fall.
This puts horses like State of Play at a disadvantage, but must surely strengthen the hand of favourite Big Fella Thanks, whose recent win in the mud stands him in good stead. Whinstone Boy is another who favours sticky conditions underfoot, but he still needs withdrawals ahead of him if he is to make the line-up. He's currently 33/1 and most bookmakers will refund the money if he isn't selected.
